Vinyl lacquers were cut by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering.\n\nUndermind was recorded at The Barn in Vermont by producer Tchad Blake in February 2004 and mixed by Tchad in England at Real World Studios in March 2004. The majority of songs were written by Trey Anastasio and Tom Marshall, along with Scott Herman on \"Scents And Subtle Sounds\" and \"Undermind.\" Page McConnell contributed \"Army Of One\", Mike Gordon \"Access Me,\" and Jon Fishman \"Tomorrow's Song\". The instrumentals \"Maggie's Revenge\" and internet\/vinyl bonus \"Tiny\" were excerpted from a full-band improvised 47-minute studio jam dubbed Headphones Jam. \"Secret Smile\" included an eleven-piece string section arranged by Maria Schneider. The single \"The Connection\" remains in occasional live rotation along with most of the album.
