Oldsolar

Perfect Backswing CD

They're finally back on disc. Glasgow's most elusive musical children finally have a new 5 track mini album available after 2000's rapturously received debut. With a brand new label, autoclave records, behind them oldsolar are setto take their mesmerically addictive blend of catchy pop, abrasive guitars and distressed pastoralism to a previously oblivious audience. The oldsolar hallmarks; found sound, electronica, inventively aggressive riffs, heartbreakingly beautiful cello, frail harmonies; are all present and correct, but there's a whole new twist going on. In "pick me up" oldsolar's indie-rock/ambient-electronica hybrid is now married to an insanely catchy, shamelessly hooky song with a chorus that dares you not to sing along (harder than not chewing a fruit pastille). Kicking off with a synth riff that the "Enola Gay" era OMD would be proud of, "pick me up" layers on kick-ass guitars, a driving rhythm and enough indie in-jokes to keep the most train-spotting train-spotter happy. The rest of the CD features a piano/cello instrumental, an off-kilter love song, an ethereally deranged experiment with a damaged live recording, and an unlisted hidden track entitled "almost there". Praise for oldsolar's debut album, Many Visitors Have Been Gored By Buffalo: "frequently beautiful" – NME "a stunner of an album" - The Sunday Times "this is gorgeous" - The Big Issue "oldsolar require your utmost attention" The List (Glasgow and Edinburgh equivalent of Time Out) "a wonderful record; allusive claustrophobic and determinedly opaque" - The Sunday Times "Good late night music" - Iain Rankin in the Rebus' novel "Resurrection Man"
