Straight outta the Proles presskit: "We are Justyn Bartles (vocals & guitar), Jeff Fisher (bass), Dan Taylor (drums & vocals) and James Jenkins (guitar & keys). Our name is short for proletariate. Basically we're a blue-collar, working class, under estimated group of lovely individuals. (Not to be confused with simple or low brow). It's all about freedom from expectations and superficial fads. Besides the usual, we collect all kinds of various instruments which appear modestly in our recordings. We play with a lot of energy and gerth, but dynamics are always considered because nothing beats an explosion.
At this point it's premature to pinpoint a particular sound or style. We're not "indie," alternative and definitely not "emo." With so many influences, it's hard to say who or what we sound like. We most frequently listen to The Police, Spoon, The Beatles, Fugazi, Nirvana, The Clash and The Smiths. But of course there's more out there than rock n' roll to work with. To sum it up we're four guys out of Sacramento who like to hear music and watch things go. We've been together for about three years now and are finally ready to come out and play. We hope to meet you soon. And if we've already met, we'd like to see you again."
"The seven songs on the Proles' swell debut CD, Index (on the local indie label The Americans Are Coming) aim for the kind of post-Nuggets garage-band feel, mated to a hidden agenda of pop-music smarts, that can found in various works by some of rock's brainier combos--from Blue Öyster Cult to Split Enz, Built to Spill and NRBQ. The songs are top-down summer tuneful, but there's something dark, slightly mysterious and strange lurking under the surface." - Sacramento News and Review
