Meets Guitar

Homesleep Singles Club Feb 03 CD

Homesleep
3 tracks. 1. meantime 2. memories of golden days 3. felton lonnin. Welcome to Meets Guitar, formally Gavin Baker Meets Guitar. Gavin Baker plays in three other bands: Billy Mahonie, Jet Johnson and Glider. Meets Guitar is the solo project where above all he finally gets to sing. In the four or so years Billy Mahonie has been going Gavin has accumulated a number of self penned songs which would not fit with his other bands. In 2002 he released a debut single on Johnny Kane Records which has been followed in January 2003 by a split single on Bearos Records. These two releases are acoustic and vaguely folky. The new release with Homesleep broadens the Meets Guitar horizon in a couple of ways. The lead track Meantime includes drums by Howard Monk of Billy Mahonie and Knom and electric guitars; the first offering of Meets' electric period. On the final track, the very traditional Felton Lonnin, Meets is joined by his father Dave Baker on mandolin and vocal and by his wife Caroline Nesbo from Jet Johnson on second vocal. This is Meets' father's debut record appearance, after 40 years of record buying and an important family milestone. Meantime and Memories of Golden Days pretty much deal with escapism either through imagination or memory. The final number is a traditional Northumbrian folk ballad about a lost child. Felton Lonnin itself is an old place name (a lonnin was a small community of dwellings along a single stretch of road). Dave and Caroline sing only the first two verses but the song has in fact three more. The final one tells that the missing child had not gone far but was discovered asleep in the barn with his new born puppies. Dave felt this ending was far too sweet and much prefered to the listener hanging on the whereabouts of the child. We based our rendition on a version recorded and released by The High Level Ranters in the early 1970's.
