Sea Shanties for Spaceships CD

Snowpony's second album was all but ignored upon its release it had the misfortune of coming out on September 11, 2001 which is a real shame for the band because Sea Shanties for Spaceships is worlds better than their 1997 debut, The Slow-Motion World of Snowpony. Less monochromatically dark than the debut, this album's sound is more in keeping with its title. Like Laika or Moonshake, Snowpony blends shards of guitar with trip-hoppy electronic beats and layers of vintage synthesizers into a sound that's alternately alluring and harsh. (More the former than the latter this time, with the glorious ebb and flow of the nearly 15-minute "Pleasure Gardens" the album's highlight.) Stewart Mason for AMG
