Once again, Drop Beat beats the bushes to bring you the freshest new talent - check the technique of our good friend Malcolm Arthur for some top-notch sonic massage. Malcolm is a young Bay Area producer who has developed a unique sound from strands of jazz, soul, house and techno (of the Detroit variety), all stamped with his unique and quite warped sense of space and style. Some obvious reference points are the space jazz of Derrick May, the reduced dub/house of the German labels like Playhouse or i220 and the found-sound tomfoolery of Herbert. It's all got that Malcolm funk, but also shows a sense of playfulness and experimentation not found in most house or techno records. All four tracks on this debut ep roll-out in a groovy, mellow mood, staking out a unique spot for Mr. Arthur in today's crowded electronic music scene.
