Luke's Angels

Luke's Angels CD

Luke's Angels began in the early '90s as a trio of friends in high school orchestra. When orchestra let out, it was friendship that found the gals sharing their common interest in popular rock bands Throwing Muses, The Breeders, PJ Harvey & Sonic Youth and eventually exchanging their classical instruments for electric guitars. A short-lived cover band project came and went and the girls parted to see what else life had in store for them. Fast-forward to 2001 when the gals found themselves together in Minneapolis, fingers burning to pick up their guitars again. With drummer, Jamie, on board, the band started writing songs and playing better shows. Having recently finished recording their self-titled, first full-length album, the band has finally defined their sound and is ready to rock. "A collegiate, no-frills quartet led by two sisters, their debut CD is like a re-broadcast of MTV's '120 Minutes,' with echoes of Throwing Muses, the Breeders and more." - Chris Riemenschneider, Star Tribune "The Angels' sound is characterized by the contrast between Carson and Jennie Kalpin's sugar-pop harmonies and Melissa's whip-smart lead guitar-an update on the old Pixies paradigm of quiet-loud-quiet. On 'One Small Glimpse,' the opener of their self-titled debut, the girls' voices beat a so-in-love lyric ('I see hidden words arise/In one small glimpse through your eyes') into sea foam before Melissa strafes her own words with a firing squad of chords." - Steve Marsh, City Pages
