2006 "best of" lists from your favorite tonevendor staff folk
** DAN (The Boss) **
* THE TOP FULL LENGTHS *
- 1.) THE BROTHER KITE-Waiting for the Time to Be Right (Clairecords-$11.00) Okay, so I should preface this with the fact that I almost never put my own bands or releases on my own label in my year-end best-of lists. It just seems wrong and gross. Like a slap in the face to the rest of your children when you tell them you really do love Johnny best. But you know what? F*ck it. The Brother Kite have crafted an undeniable masterpiece - a modern pop classic that will go down in history alongside the likes of all those amazing heralded milestones that this album gets compared to: The Soft Bulletin, Pet Sounds, Loveless... except we would rather pop this one into the player any day because it's so fresh and new and just ultimately doesn't deserve at least one daily listen. Man are we proud and glad to have TBK in our family.
- 2.) MAHOGANY-Connectivity! 2xCD (Darla-$14.99) Seemingly as long-awaited as the next MBV album, Mahogany bust out their first album of the decade after leaving us on pins and needles. Frought with problems and delays, culminating in the theft of a computer which contained the nearly-completed album, we thought we'd never see the light of day of this. But in a twist of fate, Mahogany looked adversity in the face and spat into it by cranking this out nearly live in the studio. It's the sound of joy, of beauty, of (post)modern urbanism... all the things Mahogany has been known to convey. But now add a heaping dose of upbeat pop and bright, positive outlook and you have a bit of a pleasant surprise in store. Our only complaint: why in the hell is this brilliant masterpiece not on vinyl??
- 3.) FLEETING JOYS-Despondent Transponder CD (Only Forever-$10.99) Some years ago we befriended fellow-Sacramentans The Fleeting Joys after they dropped off a bomb at the Tonevendor shop for us. That bomb was a demo CD that blew our heads off. We couldn't understand how *the* most shoegazingest band we'd heard since 1991 had been unheard of, and lurking just two blocks from our shop. We had many lengthy talks and discussions and had to sign them immediately. Sadly, our only output on Clairecords was a lone track on the now OOP sampler CD "Notes From Claire". After this, they decided to press the album themselves. But we weren't angry - we always want what's best for the band , and this is what they wanted. The sad part is their decision not to repress the album - thus a scant 1000 copies remain in existence, doomed to obscurity. This is the album that Kevin Shields likely heard and said "you know what? I give up."
- 4.) BAND OF HORSES-Everything All The Time CD (Sub Pop-$12.99) BAND OF HORSES-Everything All The Time LP (Sub Pop-$10.99) We get zillions of promos all the time at tV, and they tend to go in one ear and out the other. But 2 songs in to the Band of Horses advance, and I knew it would land a top spot in my year-end best. Like a melding of The Shins and My Morning Jacket, but somehow 5 times better than either of those bands!
- 5.) BE YOUR OWN PET-s/t CD (Ecstatic Peace-$10.99) BE YOUR OWN PET-s/t LP (Ecstatic Peace-$12.99) This one grazed right past my radar, due to their first two massively-overhyped singles which, imo, were not anything to jump up and down about. But this album, which I might add does not contain either of those singles, is solid from start to finish. A ripping classic that surely will not be eclipsed (so give up now, guys), this inspired a good thought and conversation the first time I heard it. I had been wondering: what sort of albums nowadays do "the kids" consider the awesome instant-classics that they will look back upon fondly for the rest of their lives? The Pottymouth/Seamonsters/Bikini Kill/Ramones/etc. of today - what is that?? Does it even exist? Then about halfway through this album, I realized it was right in front of my ears.
- 6.) RAYMOND SCOTT WOOLSON-Accidental Grace Notes CD RSW is akin to a one-man Slowdive of the 2000's. Much how bands like Explosions in the Sky cull the best of their 80s/90s dreampop influences such as Cocteau Twins, Lush, etc. and bring them up to date with a fresh new sound, Raymond Scott Woolson does the same in bringing gorgeous layers of atmospheric shoegaze guitar work into the new millenium.
- 7.) TELEVISE-Songs To Sing in A & E CD (Club AC30-$13.99) Ex-Slowdivers always have a lot to live up to, yet they always seem to pull it off. After the brilliant Charlottes drummer Simon Scott left that band for Slowdive, then took a slight mis-step with the not-quite-up-to-par Inner Sleeve, he joined forces with old pal Nick King and friends, took up guitar and vocals and formed Televise. While definitely appealing to old skol shoegazers, that's a weak tag to throw on this stuff - it's brilliant loud noise pop that deserves a Spinal Tap "11" on the volume knob.
- 8.) BELLE & SEBASTIAN - The Life Pursuit By Belle & Sebastian JEWEL CASE CD (Matador-$12.99) BELLE & SEBASTIAN - The Life Pursuit By Belle & Sebastian 2xLP (Matador-$16.99) MOJAVE 3-Puzzles Like You CD (4AD-$11.99) MOJAVE 3-Puzzles Like You LP (4AD-$9.99) CAMERA OBSCURA-Let's Get Out Of This Country CD (Merge-$13.99) CAMERA OBSCURA-Let's Get Out Of This Country LP (Merge-$13.99) Perhaps I'm cheating by lumping these together into one number, but who cares? It's my list, foo. Anyhoo, these three albums are all a bit synonymous with me. In my quite humble opinion, B&S have busted out the highlight of their career, Mojave 3 have followed suit by listening to lots of B&S but somehow making it work like magic, and Camera Obscura deliver their catchiest album to date - perhaps to its own detriment, as it's consistently being played - both in the CD player and consequently in my head - and therefore may suffer some extended shelf time once it wears out its welcome.
- 9.) LOVE IS ALL-Nine Times That Same Song CD (What's Yr Rupture-$10.99) LOVE IS ALL-Nine Times That Same Song 2xCD (What's Your Rupture-$11.99) Did this really come out in 2006? It seems like an '05-er. Nonetheless it was re-issued with 2nd disc late in the year, and either way you slice it, this is one brilliant pop step in the history of the 2000's. As oer my Be Your Own Pet comment above, this is the stuff that will endure generations.
- 10.) BONNIE PRINCE BILLY-The Letting Go CD (Drag City-$13.99) Good ole Bonnie/Will/whoever has been at it for so long and puts out so much volume that it's kind of annoying. Yet, as with his fabulous "Superwolf" with Matt Sweeney last year, The Letting Go is a thing of pastoral beauty. The ultimate album for floating around the pool at the end of the season, with a mix of peace and sadness at hand.
- 11.) SHOGUN KUNITOKI-Tasankokai CD (Fonal-$17.99) What do you get if you throw Steve Reich in a room to jam with The United States of America and Broadcast? Incredible, that's what. This disc approximates that idea to a tee. Perhaps this should be up higher on the list...
- 12.) WHITE BIRCH-Come Up For Air CD (Rune Grammofon-$15.99) WHITE BIRCH-Come Up For Air LP (Rune Grammofon-$16.99) I wanted to write something more clever for this one, but it reminds me of the most beautiful Piano Magic moments, yet multiplies that by a factor of 3 at least. Stunning and lovely.
- 13.) NAMUR-Songs From The Valley of Baca CD (Thehourislate-$12.99) Dreamy, evocative soundscape that recalls My Bloody Valentine & Cocteau Twins, with glimmers of glitch as in Fennesz or Khonnor. Yes, I did copy that from the one-sheet from this record, but it suits it perfectly.
- 14.) SONIC YOUTH-Rather Ripped CD (DGC-$13.99) It seems as though I say this all the time: "This is the record that Sonic Youth have finally made that is just the best thing they have done since Goo. It's a perfect closing to their career if they stop now, and they probably should." But then they usually come back with something equally or more awesome and make me say it all over again.
- 15.) SOUNDPOOL-On High CD (Aloft-$9.99) Soundpool's music is somewhere between Stereolab, My Bloody Valentine, Ladytron, Broadcast, Slowdive and Yo La Tengo. Setting out to blur the lines between alternative/indie/rock and dance/electronica, Soundpool is redifining the Shoegaze, Dream Pop and Space Rock genres. Yep, I copied that one from the one-sheet too. sorry! It's great stuff despite my personal lack of words nonetheless!
- 16.) BLACK ANGELS-Passover CD (Light in the Attic-$10.99) This one took me by surprise, as it likely did with lots of others, but it makes me feel like smoking two packs of cigs in a pool hall with a wood floor with a good half inch of dirt on it, drinking a fifth of whiskey. Or ripping down Route 66 in a convertible, wearing a cowboy hat and smoking a gigantic spliff. And that's just not me. Go figure.
- 17.) ROBIN GUTHRIE-Continental CD (Darla-$12.99) Somehow I dismissed Robin's earlier solo recordings, perhaps confusing them with Simon Raymonde's, but this is a gorgeous thing. At first, it sounded to me as though this was being influenced by those bands from the 90s who were influenced by late 80s Cocteau Twins. A bit of a full circle, if you will. But then it dawned on me that Robin is, and was, and always will be, the master of atmospheric guitar work, period.
- 18.) CHIHEI HATAKEYAMA-Minima Moralia CD (Kranky-$11.99) Somehow embodying the sounds of crystalline deep space as equally as the sounds of the deep black oceans. Music for floating, any way you slice it. Beautiful music for a crisp drive thru the darkness of night.
- 19.) CAIRO GANG-s/t CD (Narnack-$11.99) Here's another one that should not be so low down on the list. And should not have a lame description that tells you nothing about the record. But this is 3 months late and I've run out of time in my self-imposed deadline. It's awesome though. Trust me.
- 20.) THE HIT PARADE-Return of the Hit Parade CD (JSH-$14.99) Despite my love of all things C86, Sarah Records, etc., I just could never get into the older Hit Parade stuff much. Just never appealed to me. Then out of the blue, they seemed to come rolling back in recent years, culminating in this fantastic album that eclipses any of their 80s/90s stuff by miles. Some things do get better with age.
* SINGLES / EPs *
- 1.) caUSE co-MOTION-Which Way Is Up 7" (What's Yr Rupture-$5.99) The title track off this brilliant latest single from NYC's ccM had us declaring "single of the year!" before the turntable even stopped spinning. Ultimate lo-fi crash-pop that's equally catchy as hell and quirky as anything. All their singles are worth collecting, as are all the WYR releases.
- 2.) THE HOW-Happy Matt 7" (Slumberland-$3.99) CRABAPPLES-Crabapples For Change 7" (Slumberland-$3.99) A triumphant return to form for the recently-sleeping Slumberland! Two simultaneously issued singles in the old skool style of Slumberland brilliance. The How, in case ya didn't know, is Stew Boyracer and Matt Henry's Dress channeling Keith Moon and Pete Townsend circa 1967-69 or so. They only released one single prior to this and left us all drooling for more. Thanks guys! Crabapples are California's salute to UK c86 (and post-c86) crashing indiepop noise a la Flatmates, Fat Tulips, Talulah Gosh, etc. And we can *never* have enough of that. Not to mention the band features Amy Frenchmen and Mike Slumberland too!
- 3.) SIANSPHERIC-I Wouldn't Expect You To Understand 7" (Black Mountain Music-$4.99) W-H-A-T---T-H-E---F-L-I-P---?-!-?-! The first SIANspheric release *EVER* on vinyl and it is limited to just 300 copies?!?! On white vinyl? And all three tracks are brand new?! Helllloooo!!! Get your clicking finger ready to tap that buy button pronto!! Hamilton space rock legends SIANspheric are back with their first release in 3 years and their first vinyl release ever. 'I Wouldn't Expect You To Understand' features three new SIAN tracks- the A side is a blistering, feedback driven song that will transport the listener back to hazy days of '93, while the B side, 'Knowing Where You Are' is a simple, beautiful and fragile acoustic song. Limited to 300 copies on white vinyl with provocative hand-screened sleeves by Yo! Rodeo, this is a must have for SIANspheric fans and anyone who spent some time gazing at their shoes.
- 4.) BOARDS OF CANADA-Trans Canada Highway 12" (Warp-$12.99) What the heck happened to everyone's taste?! People went apeshit over BOC so many years ago but it seems like their latest release (The Campfire Phase) went right by everybody. They're still amazing, but I guess people are too busy looking for the "next big thing" or whatever. They busted out this massively beautiful EP in '06 and it's some of their most gorgeous stuff in years. Blissful, dreamy, and oh so savory.
- 5.) THE AIRFIELDS-Laneways EP CD (Humblebee-$8.99) THE AIRFIELDS-Laneways 10" (Humblebee-$8.99) From out of nowhere (and still criminally over(/under?)looked, The Airfields came outta Canada to surprise us with an EPs worth of pastoral beauty not at all unlike The Clientele - but with a touch more Slowdive-flavored dreampop. Then the label said a big thank you to those paying attention and issued this lovely disc on a 10" white slab o wax and limited it to 300. I love you.
- 6.) ROBERT LIPPOK-Robot EP CD (Western Vinyl-$7.99) Former To Rococo Rot dude gets nostalgic and summons up a combination of early TRR sounds combined with a fondness for 80s robot technology. The result is pure joy.
- 7.) GIARDINI DI MIRO-North Atlantic Treaty Of Love Pt. One 12" (2nd Rec-$10.99) GDM have had a rough year, after losing a member and now being pressured to finish up their new album, but in the meantime they banged out this EP worth of their trademark gorgeous beauty. New full length should be coming in the '07, and hopefully followed up shortly with their 12" on Claire's Echo!
- 8.) ISAN-Trois Gymnopedies 7" (Morr Music-$6.99) Was 2006 the year of Erik Satie or what?? I mean, the guy must be partying in his grave like no other. ISAN was on top of the game with this brilliant reinterpretation of 3 of his works best suited to the 7" format - and it works with so much briliance. Since then, Satie reissues came flying in all directions, and it seemed he was name-dropped as much as Kevin Shields. Go figure - the public is getting smart/classy.
- 9.) VOXTROT-Mothers, Sisters, Daughers, Wives CDEP (Cult Hero-$6.99) Yes, these guys were the bomb when they issued their two debut singles. And they continued blowing sh*t up with this, their third single, early in 06. Now they are signed to Mr Big Label, and they are still the bee's knees, and leaving everyone on pins and needles waiting for that full length to be as brilliant as the singles. Can they be the next Smiths? Or will they never top the brilliance of their singles? Time will tell...
- 10.) SECRET SHINE-Beyond Sea and Sky EP CD (Razorblade-$5.99) Clairecords chased Sarah Records proprieters for, literally, years, asking for the rights to reissue Secret Shine's incredible catalog of indie classic shoegaze masterpieces. When we did several years ago, it kind of woke the band out of their seemingly-permanent slumber hiatus and caused them to reform due to popular public interest. Their first output since, the Elemental EP, was a much-welcomed comeback, but this newest single is a true return to form, bringing in all the walls of guitars that we loved from the get-go. A new album in 07 promises to be magical.
* REISSUES / COLLECTIONS *
- 1.) RHYS CHATHAM-Die Donnergotter CD (Table of The Elements-$13.99) RHYS CHATHAM-Die Donnergotter 2xLP (Table of The Elements-$18.99) RHYS CHATHAM-An Angel Moves Too Fast To See CD (Table Of The Elements-$13.99) RHYS CHATHAM-An Angel Moves Too Fast To See LP (Table Of The Elements-$14.99) I believe it was sometime in 2005 that I doscivered and went apeshit over Rhys Chatham. I mean, the guy was creating monster guitar pieces in the freaking 70s! Stuff that would make Kevin Shields or any of his billions of followers marvel in bewilderment. He combines the classicism of avant garde compsing with the raw fury of guitar driven rock, and it's like the best thing I'd discovered in a decade. I was lucky enough to catch his performance at SXSW 2006, and it was the highlight of the entire week. TOE's reissues of these two works is a godsend. If you are not familiar with Rhys Chatham, but are remotely interested in shoegaze/dreampop/post-rock/indierock, you owe yourself (and Rhys) the favor of picking these up!
- 2.) BLOPS-Blops 3xCD BOX SET (Shadoks-$49.99) For some reason, Heather loves to make fun of the fact of my recent obsession over the flute. It's a beautiful instrument that sounds great in jazz or in psychedelic jams like this. There's flute mixed in in great restraint here but it makes a perfect sound that much more so. It's kind of like why you like Lord of The Rings - it's amazing and magical and phenomenal. But you swear you aren't a big dork about it. You don't live at home with your mom, and you do have a girlfriend... it's just a tremendous and timeless piece of fantasy that's crossed over. This is the aural equivalent.
- 3.) SIBYLLE BAIER-Colour Green CD (Orange Twin-$11.99) Out of nowhere, this reissue came at us (and the rest of the unsuspecting world) like a ton of bricks. Again, one of those out of an absolute mountain of promos we are constantly under, but as soon as a few tracks had played we knew it was one of the best things we've heard all year. Absolutely beautiful and ultra special stuff that comes straight from the songwriter's heart and soul, equally.
- 4.) CHARLOTTES-Liar: The Best Of The Charlottes CD (Cherry Red-$13.99) We looked into reissuing the brilliant 2nd Charlottes album "Things Come Apart" many years ago, but it was a bit cost-prohibitive for our tiny label. Funny then that Cherry Red, who issued the original, went one further and combined that album with their first album and most of their single tracks to make a virtual complete recordings reissue. We like to think we had something to do with it anyway. This is the band Simon Scott left to join Slowdive when they got signed to Creation. Or something along those lines.
- 5.) VARIOUS ARTISTS-Souvenirs From Egg Records CD (Egg Records-$17.99) Somehow, all these year, I missed the boat on Egg Records. Yet it is all absolutely essential c86-era indiepop for any fan of early Creation, etc. This compilation is the ultimate starting point and will have your jaw dropping and your ebay trigger finger itching for weeks, if not months, to come.
- 6.) JACKIE MITTOO-Wishbone CD (Light in the Attic-$12.99) Reggae, this is not. At least I wouldn't call it as such. Yet it somehow gets continuously pigeonholed into that niche in every writeup I've seen. Sure, Jackie Mittoo was apparently like the house band keyboardist of Studio One. But this is some seriously dope funky stuff, not really reggae or dancehall or rock steady or anything. Then again, I don't really feel qualified to review those types of music. All I know is that this disc totally smokes and puts a huge grin on my face every time I hear it.
- 7.) VARIOUS ARTISTS-Love Is Love LP (Mississippi-$12.99) Mississippi Records can do no wrong, can they? Everything on this limited-vinyl-release label is worth owning. Here they have gone through the trouble of tracking down an album's worth of extremely rare recordings from Africa, and it's like an instant party in your house. With a world/island flavor to all the tunes, if these don't set your feet on fire from dancing, you are inhuman. Or too emo.
- 8.) MARCONI NOTARO-No Sub Reino Dos Metazoarios CD (Time Lag-$18.99) MARCONI NOTARO-No Sub Reino Dos Metazoarios 2xLP (Time Lag-$27.99)
- 9.) NARA LEAO-Nara '67 CD (El-$13.99)
- 10.) HARMONIA-Musik Von Harmonia 180g LP (Lilith-$15.99)
- 11.) ARTHUR RUSSELL-First Thought, Best Thought 2xCD (Audika-$21.99) ARTHUR RUSSELL-First Thought Best Thought 3xLP (Audika-$27.99)
- 12.) LINDA PERHACS-Parallelograms LP (Guerssen-$23.99) Finally readily available on vinyl without costing a fortune!
- 13.) MARGO GURYAN-Take A Picture 180g LP (Sundazed-$15.99)
- 14.) DELTA 5-Singles and Sessions: 1979-1981 CD (Kill Rock Stars-$13.99)
- 15.) ARNOLD DREYBLATT AND THE ORCHESTRA OF EXCITED STRINGS-Live At Federal Hall National Memorial CD (Table of the Elements-$13.99)
- 16.) BILL FAY GROUP-Tomorrow, Tomorrow and Tomorrow LP (Drag City-$14.99)
- 17.) SACHIKO KANENOBU-Misora CD (Chapter-$12.99)
* MULTIMEDIA *
- 1.) THE DEVIL & DANIEL JOHNSTON This is the best documentary I've seen all year (perhaps in the last several), let alone best music-related doc. Even if you don't know who the hell DJ is, this will set your heart aflutter. I must admit, I'm not much of a DJ fan, although I am familiar with lots of his music mostly via covers from everyone and anyone. But this wonderfully put-together documentary is totally touching and beautiful in every way.
- 2.) SIANSPHERIC-RGB DVD+CD (Sonic Unyon-$10.99) Oddly, I only one one SIANspheric album, but all of their music is terrific. This collection of videos, short films, and on-the-road footage is good stuff for late night viewing in the privacy of your own bong-ripping lair. And is just as good even if you're sober.
- 3.) PAIK-Magnesium Fire DVD+CD (Beyonder-$15.99) Nothing can compare to Paik's live show, and God knows you sure as hell can't capture that awesome power on DVD! Still, this performance from one of their largest shows makes for a good experience nonetheless. As a bonus, this comes with a 3" CD of the uber-limited "Spacer" single, which is worth it alone.
- 4.) BLOC PARTY-God Bless Bloc Party DVD (Vice-$15.99) Bloc Party got all the hype, and the cameras were there to catch it at its most fevered. As such, this makes for fun viewing, making them appear like worldwide rock heroes (which maybe they are??). Excellent live footage with great sound. Let's hope they pull out all the stops on their next album too. (Post-list editorial note: they didn't.)
